This is the OLD PROLOGUE of my own  quasi-original Danganronpa Fanfic! (Season 2) that has since been reworked. This version is mainly being retained as a 'legacy version'.

By playing the game, it is assumed you have read and agreed to the disclaimers provided below.

**DISCLAIMERS**

Note that this project uses traced sprites (the reasons for this are indicated at the very bottom) and is an exclusively non-profit, fan-based project that operates without the production values of projects such as Kill/Cure and Rebirth.  It also was (and still is) created for my friends, meaning there may be some ongoing references and quirks that are of a more esoteric character.

Moreover, all assets commissioned specifically for this project (including sprites and *some* of the backgroundsare intended for exclusive use within this project

If none of this bothers you, then welcome aboard! We hope you enjoy your stay^^

Discord link for anyone even remotely interested in the project; most of us don't bite, and you can chat with other fans + the voice actors/actresses we've got on board for Chapter 2 onwards https://discord.gg/G9Yv657

- If you want to contribute art/audio/your coding skills/your video animation skills/etc. then please feel free to hop on and mention it. We're...kinda understaffed, so anything helps^^

Current status of the fan game: Chapter 2: Daily Life completed.

Chapter 1 has been completed, including the Prologue (aka this game; this is only a provisional release to see if there's general interest given all the in-jokes, references, etc.), Daily Life, Investigation, Class Trial

Friend of mine's class trial playthrough (basically spoils the story up to that point though):

Beware of:

- References to the 'first season'

- In-jokes/references [which become less prevalent as the season progresses]

- Lame anime/gaming/pop culture/etc. references [which don't become less prevalent]

- Walls of text. Oh hey, what a coincidence (if you can be bothered reading everything below though, props to you.)

About us:

- 3 person team. I'm the writer/basic programmer, while my two friends do all the heavy lifting with coding, animation, asset creation, play testing, etc. etc.

- I certainly wouldn't call myself a professional fiction writer. My OG goal was to create 17 distinct characters without overlapping their personalities. And yes, I understand my writing style also tends towards verbosity, but that becomes less of a problem as the chapters progress.

- 'Mingersoft' wasn't my idea and I much prefer simply referring to the dev team as 'Team Alpha'.

- We tried to create a relatively legit-looking Danganronpa VN. Given our non-existent production values and limited time (we're all full-time university students), I daresay we succeeded for the most part.

About the project:

- Originally (still) made to be a bit of harmless fun, with my friends as the target audience

- Completely non-commercial. But if you want, you can pay me with constructive comments :3

- Filled to the brim with inside jokes/random gaming/anime/pop/etc. references.

- The prologue release is mainly to test the waters and see if a non-involved audience will find this playable despite the aforementioned writing quirks. Also, seeing if we can make a dent through the fact that this is actually a playable game rather than just a web series (apparently the whole 'playable game' thing is a selling point).

The characters are intended to be relatively unique, but still sorta fit in to the Danganronpa universe as characters in their own right. They're also supposed to reference my friends through obscure, hyper-exaggerated character qualities/quotes. These qualities were exaggerated to the extent that most of them didn't recognise their own characters (true story).

The following is intended to credit content creators for work I have used which is NOT MY OWN:

  • Chi from Seichizu for being (and continuing to be) a WONDERFUL sprite artist. And of course, for putting up with me. I have nothing but praise for the incredible work she has put in.
  • Blow off Candle (HD Video Collection, used in the OP)
  • Fast Ticking Clock (Eden Goring, used in the OP)
  • Team Alpha (hey looks it's us! Intro cards for all characters, in snazzy Danganronpa v3 style? Say no more!)
  • LCat4Ever (compilation of Danganronpa backgrounds)
  • SheWolf294 (Graveyard, used in the first scene)
  • The creators of the Danganronpa Rebirth OP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-QWn-Nyxu0 (concept and audio used for the OP)
  • Spike Chunsoft (for all the Monokuma sprites + the Danganronpa music that I used, including):
  • -Beautiful Lie (main daily life theme, from DR v3)
  • -Becoming Friends (Free Time Event theme, from DR v3)
  • -Cool Morning (secondary daily life theme, DR v3)
  • -Mr Monokuma’s Class (Monokuma’s Theme, DR v3)
  • -Nightmare in the Locker (DR v3)
  • -Living in a Lazy Parallel World (DR v3)
  • -Real Fiction (Prologue Theme, DR v3)
  • -Rise of the Ultimates (DR v3)
  • -Heaps of assorted sound effects (mainly DR2)
  • Capcom (for all the Phoenix Wright music that was used as character themes, including):
  • -Elise Deauxnim (Simple Melody, Trials and Tribulations – used as Eden’s theme)
  • -Justine Courtney (Goddess of Law – Ace Attorney Investigations 2 – used as Levitica’s theme)
  • -Kay Faraday (Reminiscence: The Girl’s Lost Memories – Ace Attorney Investigations 2 – used as Mii-Yu’s theme)
  • -Dahlia Hawthorne (Distant Trace – Trials and Tribulations – used as Mona’s theme)
  • Britain
  • -‘Rule Brittania’, which was used [totes inappropriately but W/E] as Hunt’s theme

**Why traced sprites?**

A decent chunk of the sprites are traced. This is because:

(a) This game was originally for a private audience. We only recently succumbed to ["intense, internal"] pressure to make this public.

(b) We thought the overall aesthetic of the characters was unique enough to overcome any ramifications of tracing.

(c) This project is limited by a budgeting factor; as lame as it may sound, untraced sprites are much more expensive and did not seem like a preferable choice in light of points (a) and (b).

However, as both (a) and (b) no longer seem to be relevant, we'll be looking to commission more unique, project-specific sprites. However, this certainly won't happen overnight and is subject to the [very limited] availability of artists. On a side note though, a lot of new sprites were added in this installment of the game, as was hopefully noticed by the series regulars^^

I just finished chapter 1, the end of the class trial was so emotional, You hit me with so much feels :$ But I gotta admit, the story, the mysteries, the characters, the humour... Everything was perfectly crafted. Well done ! Looking forward to play the next chapter !

(+2)

how do you get chapter one

(+1)

Hi, I have to say that I really enjoyed playing this game!!

everything seems to be like danganronpa which others have failed to do so, but you have succeded!

there were some bugs(if you save the game when the 3 choices are shown, when you reload the game, you can't choose any choice!) and some mistakes with spelling (I would like to point it out, but I really forgot what the misspelled word was, anyway it was at the first maybe 10 minutes of playing).

also, I don't know if it's because of me or you, but since English isn't my mother language, I quite didn't understand the story, not everything was clear.  So I don't know if the problem was with my English level (but with my recent English level I finished all danganronpas and understood everything), or with your type of writing.

you, also, did a great job of making 17 different characters, but I even still feel like most of the female characters have the same "attitude", unlike the male characters.

I kind of felt lost with the names of the characters, they should be like "Blaise Nerume" (so you could call Blaise with "Blaise" or with "Nerume", like in all danganronpas, for instanse, Nagito Komaeda )

Putting all of that aside, Thank you very much for recreating the same experience that I had with danganronpa series.

(+1)

When starting the game, all I see is a black screen? Any idea why?

(+2)

how do you play the 2 other chapters

(1 edit) (+1)

Frankly excellent! I love your game!

The story, characters, backgrounds, references... All is well thought and you can easily understand how each character evolve. It is like a true Danganronpa game: well done!

I just would like one more thing: more images. In some cases you can imagine what is happening, and that is very well done. However in other cases such as the deadly life part, I think it would be best to display the different clues you find.

I played the prologue and chapter 1 and 2 and both your writting and the sprites got better!

I want to follow the story till the end now! When is the deadly life of chapter 2 come out?

(+1)

Thank you for your kind words! I continue to marvel every time someone outside my friend group ends up enjoying the game!

Chapter 2's deadly life will be released when we're able to set something up with Unity, Xenko or a similar such program. This will likely take a *very* long time, so we don't have anything definitive in terms of schedule right now. We'll be making an announcement on the discord when we can come up with something more concrete.

Thanks again^^

Where do I find Chapter 1 and 2?

(+1)

Me and my friend (haha oops she already commented) played through this and talked about it with each other a bit.  This is a fun project and I definitely enjoyed playing it! Some of the backstory was a little confusing at first (as warned), but I think after the first bit it was easier to roll with it. Basically after I understood the conceit of like 'all of these characters are related to characters from a previous killing game' it kind of clicked into place.

Your character writing was really well done btw! I think you definitely accomplished your goal (writing 17 characters with a unique voice). I enjoyed the intros about as much as I did in the canon games.

Overall, this was a really well polished fangame (right down to the intro video, which was a nice touch). I was checking through the DR tag trying to find things like this, so thanks for being literally the only one to deliver! (I'll probably end up snooping on the Discord to see the rest of Chapter 1, I'm interested in seeing how you tackled the trial and investigation owo)

(+1)

Hiya! It’s certainly a relief to hear that you thought the prologue was at least minimally tolerable and that you found the characters to be well-written! As previously stated, the initial target audience was extremely narrow, to the point where every character except Killmore (Monokuma) and Mii-Yu have at least a couple of esoteric inside references that no-one outside my immediate friend group would likely understand ><. They got phased out gradually after the prologue anyway, but everything else (including random gaming references such as Levitica’s Age of Empires II-style conversion method, just to name one of many) will be left in since they they’re things literally everyone *can* understand^^

I’ve noticed that you’ve dropped by the discord! I’d love to hear what either yourself or Vee think about the rest of Ch 1 (daily life/investigation/trial). Our vision for the Chapter 2 trial will be massively ambitious, from the VA to the gameplay, so we’d really like to make sure we’re going in without repeating (too many of) the mistakes from Chapter 1.

Thank you!

(+1)

Hey I played through this and it's super cool. I see that there's a linked video of someone else playing through the trial, but it isn't available here it seems? Is there a public access version for playing the trial, or is this prologue all that we can check out right now? Additionally, where can I find out more about the first killing game for this universe?

(1 edit) (+1)

Hiya Vee! I'm delighted (and shocked) to hear that you liked the prologue! If you want to play through the rest of Chapter 1, I'd recommend joining the discord server. Links to the remainder of Chapter 1 are posted there, as well as a soon-to-be-posted 'compendium' summarising the key events of Season 1. There's also the added bonus of being able to mingle with others who are interested in the project, as well as the full cast of voice actors/actresses that are on board for Chapter 2 onwards. The link is as follows: https://discord.gg/G9Yv657

If there's a reasonable response to Chapter 2, Team Alpha may go back and try to make Chapter 1 a tad more presentable before subjecting it to public release. I think there's simply too many latent flaws for me to feel comfortable doing that at this very moment. I hope you and anyone reading this are understanding of it^^. The lukewarm response to the prologue, though better than what I was originally expecting, has done little to allay those concerns on my end. I don't think it would be wise to split focus between making Chapter 2 and re-doing Chapter 1, which is why we're choosing to press ahead for now.

At this point, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Unity trial we have in mind for Chapter 2 ends up working well with the general implementation of VA (voice acting - the casting call I mentioned in the description actually closed two weeks ago and the quality of the auditions completely below me away).

^^^Yes, I'm still terrible at concise writing. Please let me know if you have any other questions!^^
